What is PCIT? PCIT is an evidence-based treatment for children between the ages of 2 and 6 with behavior challenges.
What Can I Expect in PCIT Sessions? In PCIT sessions, parents are involved in the sessions and receive in the moment “coaching” by the therapist. The therapist observes parents interacting with the child. As the parent, you are given in-the-moment feedback on skills you are learning to help you manage your child’s behavior effectively.
What Behaviors Does PCIT Address? Common behaviors PCIT addresses include:
Destructive behaviors
Defiant behaviors
Tantrums in public and at home
Behavior challenges in child care and preschool
What is the Typical Outcome of PCIT? There are many positive outcomes of PCIT. Many parents report:
Decreased destructive and negative attention-seeking behaviors
Decreased tantrums
Increase in the child’s self-esteem and self-regulation skills
Overall improved interactions within the family (parents report “enjoying their child” again)
